TIPPERARY Mineral Spring
Tipperary mineral spring is located adjacent to the banks of Sailors Creek. The park’s centrepiece is a magnificent manna gum tree. Picnic facilities are available. A bridge connects both sides of the creek. When standing on the bridge you might be lucky enough to see bubbles rising in the deep pool formed by mineral water seeping up from the creek bed.
Nature enthusiasts can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of these springs, serenaded by the melodious chirping of native birds.
In 2001 a new bore, 51m deep, was drilled with a hand pump which allows you to draw the water for tasting. In 1912 a cement lined pit was constructed around Tipperary Spring which remained open to the public until 2023. The now closed pit is located across the bridge opposite the carpark.
The spring itself was discovered sometime in the 1850s, and in 1884, a 2ha reserve was established to protect it from mining. However, the miners ignored the regulations and pegs that identified the reserve, and the spring was eventually buried under a mullock heap created during mining operations.
The 210km Goldfields Track connects Tipperary Spring with other springs within the Daylesford, Hepburn and Castlemaine area. There is also a short circuit walk from Tipperary Springs to Bryces Flat (north) or Twin Bridges (south) – check Parks Vic website for track conditions.
