Kyneton Mineral Springs
For a natural rejuvenation experience, visit Kyneton Mineral Springs Reserve located on Boggy Creek on Burton Avenue, Kyneton. Enjoy a picnic under the classical Edwardian rotunda with tiled floor and domed roof, built over the spring in 1914. Use the old pump to sample the renowned mineral water, a local health secret.
The reserve offers free overnight parking for up to 48 hours for RVs and caravans on a first come, first served basis. It's a spacious area with various play equipment suitable for toddlers to older children. Highly visible from the surrounding area, the reserve features two mineral spring water pumps, picnic tables, barbecue facilities, toilets, car parking, and ample shade from large trees.
One of the springs is located under an elegant rotunda which has pairs of turned timber posts that support the tiled roof. The spring bore was reconditioned in 1960 and again in 2000 when major restoration works to the bore, pump, rotunda and surrounds were undertaken. The bore has a depth of 22m.
The other spring, located to the south, was installed in 2003, and has is 30m deep. It is in great contrast to the Rotunda Spring with a definite Australian feel created by the semi-circular rock work and paving, native grasses and shrubs that sit beside the parks tall eucalypt trees.
A few metres further to the south and closer to the road is another bore from which mineral water is pumped to the Kyneton Mineral Water bottling plant.
The spring was probably known to passing diggers and travellers in the early 1880s. In 1890 the Shire of Kyneton fenced off the springs, provided visitor facilities and established a public park and garden reserve with 1.7 ha set aside for camping and watering purposes at the junction of Boggy Creek and the Campaspe River.
In June 1912 P. Bayly, Chief Analyst of the Geological Survey Laboratory, reported that the spring had an iron pipe sunk into it from which the water was flowing freely by natural pressure - The water is clean and sparkling with a pleasant mineral taste. It is strongly impregnated with gas.
When the flow of the Campaspe River is low, a small flow of gas bubbles may be seen emerging from near the western bank of the river about 20m upstream (south) from the rotunda.
