Glenlyon Mineral Spring
Alongside the Kangaroo Creek, Glenlyon Spring is easily accessed being on the outskirts of the township of Glenlyon. A popular picnic destination the area includes covered picnic shelters, free electric BBQ, toilets and parkland. Camping is permitted at the picturesque reserve which incorporates a cross-country course for horses, a cricket oval and small racetrack. The current Glenlyon mineral spring bore was drilled in 2006 and has a depth of 98m.
Enjoyment of mineral spring water is part of Glenlyon’s history which once boasted four hotels, a brewery and numerous stores supplying the goldfields. The land the mineral spring is located upon was set aside in 1868 for a reserve and gazetted in 1880 as a public park. By 1907 the use of the reserve was expanded to include horse racing and general recreation.
In 1911 Ferguson of the Geological Survey suggested development of the spring and in 1913 the first water samples were collected. By 1930 nine bores had been drilled in the south-east corner of the reserve. In January 1980 a new bore was drilled by Itaus Investments (Taurina Spa). The bore had a depth of 83 m with mineral water being struck at 21 m and again at 81 m. Taurina Spa was licensed to extract 15 megalitres of mineral water per annum. The water was stored in tanks before road tankers took it to Melbourne for bottling. The last extraction was in 1982 as mineral spring water began to lose its appeal in the market.
